Desktop Icons Missing in Windows 11? Eight Fixes, in Order
You turn on the PC and the desktop is just a wallpaper: no Recycle Bin, no shortcuts, nothing to double-click. Missing desktop icons in Windows 11 usually have a simple explanation. The fixes below go from the quickest and least invasive to the most involved, so work down the list and stop when the icons come back.
“Desktop icons” are really two different things. The built-in ones (This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, Control Panel and your user folder) are system shortcuts with their own on/off switches. Most other desktop items are files, folders or shortcuts stored in your Desktop or Public Desktop folder. Different causes affect each kind.
1. Check that icons are not simply hidden
Right-click an empty part of the desktop, choose View, and look at Show desktop icons. If it has no check mark, click it. This one setting hides every icon on the desktop at once, and it is easy to toggle by accident.
2. Turn on the system icons (This PC, Recycle Bin and others)
Of the five built-in system icons, only the Recycle Bin is normally switched on by default, so it is normal not to see This PC on a fresh setup. To add the others:
- Open Settings and go to Personalization, then Themes.
- Under Related settings, select Desktop icon settings.
- In the Desktop Icons box, tick the ones you want: Computer (shown as This PC), User’s Files, Network, Recycle Bin, Control Panel.
- Select Apply, then OK.
The same window has a Change Icon button and a Restore Default button, which is useful if an icon shows the wrong picture.
3. Restart Windows Explorer
The desktop is drawn by Windows Explorer (explorer.exe), and if it hangs or only half-starts, the icons may not appear. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, find Windows Explorer in the list, right-click it and choose Restart. The screen goes blank for a moment and then comes back. If Windows Explorer is not in the list at all, choose Run new task from the top of Task Manager, type explorer.exe and press Enter.
4. Make sure the files are still there
If only your own files and shortcuts are missing while the system icons are fine, check that they exist. Press Win+R, type shell:desktop and press Enter. That opens your Desktop folder in File Explorer. Two other places feed the desktop and are worth a look:
- The public desktop,
C:\Users\Public\Desktop, whose items appear for every user on the PC. Installers often put shortcuts here. - OneDrive. If OneDrive’s folder backup is on for the desktop, your Desktop folder itself is inside OneDrive (
OneDrive\Desktop). Changing the backup setting or unlinking OneDrive can leave the files in the OneDrive folder while the desktop looks empty. Check where the Desktop folder really is and what OneDrive’s Sync and backup settings say before moving anything.
From PowerShell, this lists what is in your Desktop folder, including hidden items:
Get-ChildItem ([Environment]::GetFolderPath('Desktop')) -Force
A file that has the Hidden attribute set will not show on the desktop unless File Explorer is set to show hidden items (View, then Show, then Hidden items).
5. Check the registry and policy switches
The visibility settings are stored in the registry, which is useful when you manage PCs from scripts or when the setting seems to ignore you. Two places matter:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced, valueHideIcons. Zero means icons are shown;1hides them all, matching the Show desktop icons menu item in step 1.HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel, with one value per system icon, named by its GUID.0shows that icon and1hides it. If a value is missing, Windows uses its default.

The GUIDs below were checked against the registry on that PC and resolve to these names:
| Icon | Value name in NewStartPanel |
|---|---|
| This PC | {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} |
| User’s Files | {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee} |
| Network | {F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C} |
| Recycle Bin | {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} |
| Control Panel | {5399E694-6CE5-4D6C-8FCE-1D8870FDCBA0} |
A value changed directly in the registry only takes effect after Explorer restarts (step 3). To switch all five system icons on for your account, run this in PowerShell as the affected user, then restart Explorer:
$key = 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel'
if (-not (Test-Path -LiteralPath $key)) { New-Item -Path $key -Force | Out-Null }
'{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}',
'{59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}',
'{F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C}',
'{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}',
'{5399E694-6CE5-4D6C-8FCE-1D8870FDCBA0}' |
ForEach-Object { New-ItemProperty -Path $key -Name $_ -Value 0 -PropertyType DWord -Force | Out-Null }
The script only writes five values and leaves any other values under that key alone. It still depends on icons being visible overall (step 1) and on no policy overriding them. The commands were tested on a temporary key.
On a work PC there is another switch: the policy Hide and disable all items on the desktop, which stores a NoDesktop value under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. If that is set to 1, no icon appears, right-clicking the desktop does nothing, and the setting in step 1 will not help. Check for it with reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /v NoDesktop; a machine-wide twin can exist under HKLM on managed PCs. On a work PC, ask whoever administers it. To see which policies apply to your account, gpresult /scope user /h "%TEMP%\policy.html" /f writes a report you can open in a browser. Remove a value only if you know where it came from.
6. Rebuild the icon cache (icons are blank or the wrong picture)
If the icons are there but show as blank white pages or the wrong image, the icon cache may be damaged or out of date (a broken shortcut target or a faulty app can cause the same symptom). On current Windows versions the cache is the iconcache_*.db files in %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer; older versions also used %localappdata%\IconCache.db, which may still be present on an upgraded PC. It is safe to delete them, since Windows rebuilds the cache. Use a normal (not administrator) Command Prompt, so that Explorer restarts without elevated rights:
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
if exist "%localappdata%\IconCache.db" del /a /q "%localappdata%\IconCache.db"
del /a /q "%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache_*.db"
start explorer.exe
The desktop goes blank while Explorer is stopped and returns a few seconds later, and the first redraw may be slow while the cache rebuilds. If a del reports that a file is in use, run it again once Explorer is stopped, and check for errors before assuming the cache was rebuilt.
7. Check the display setup
With more than one monitor, or a monitor that was unplugged, icons can end up on a display that is off or not connected. Press Win+P and pick PC screen only or Duplicate, which may bring them back to one screen, and look at Settings, System, Display to confirm which monitor is the main one. If the icons overlap or sit off to one side after a resolution change, right-click the desktop, choose View and toggle Auto arrange icons off and on (this rearranges the existing layout, so note where things were first).
8. Rule out damage and malware
If nothing above changes anything, run a Microsoft Defender full scan, then repair the system files from an elevated Command Prompt. The DISM and SFC guide explains the order. As a last test, sign in with a new local user account. If the desktop is normal there, the problem is specific to your user profile rather than to Windows as a whole.
Quick reference

Common questions
Why did my desktop icons disappear after an update?
If icons vanish after an update, first check the visibility settings (steps 1 and 2) and restart Explorer (step 3).
Why does Windows 11 show only the Recycle Bin on a new PC?
That is the default. This PC, Network, User’s Files and Control Panel are off until you enable them in Desktop icon settings.
Can I stop icons from moving around?
Turn off Auto arrange icons in the View menu, and check Align icons to grid and the icon size (Large, Medium or Small) while you are there. Icons can still shift if the screen resolution or display arrangement changes.
Are deleted shortcuts in the Recycle Bin?
Items deleted normally through File Explorer usually go to the Recycle Bin, unless they were removed with Shift+Delete or the bin was emptied. If your Desktop is backed up by OneDrive, also check OneDrive’s recycle bin on the web.
